Wildlearning - Spring Bird ID April 22

22 April 2018, 09:00 - 13:00 (Add to calendar)

Spend a fascinating day at the Trust's Foxburrow Farm reserve with experienced local birder Edward Jackson, identifying birds by both sight and sound.

Advertised as ‘Spring Birdsong’, the title of this course has been modified to reflect the fact that the day will help improve bird identification skills by sight as well as by sound. Whether you are relatively new to birding or have some experience already, there will be plenty of opportunities to develop your skills further.

Edward has wide-ranging experience teaching bird ID in the UK and overseas. His approach is very much focused around encouraging you to really look at what you see and listen to what you hear, so you create useful and long-lasting memories you can recall at a later date.

As well as using your eyes and ears during the day, you will discuss the different bird species you encounter: why they look and sound as they do and how to tell them apart from look-alikes and sound-alikes.

Weather permitting, much of the time as possible is spent outside around the Foxburrow Farm Reserve. Edward will use a field guide to point out the key features of the birds you see and also smartphone apps to play recordings of the birds you hear, so that you can really grasp and memorise the sound patterns. (Note that any sounds played back this way will be at a low level and some distance away, so as not to disturb the real birds!).

Moving through the different habitats, it’s possible that birds that you would expect to be there are not for some reason. You will use the field guide and apps to highlight what other species might be present.

The field excursions will be complemented by time back at the Learning Centre with DVD and PowerPoint slide presentations that reinforce your learning.
